Welcome to my Lessons Section.
These lessons I consider to be important recommendations for good quilting practice. These techniques and tips can save time and frustration for an activity that should be fun and rewarding even though quilting can also be mentally and emotionally challenging and absorb a big part of your life.
The three perennial problems I encounter in my classes are cutting, sewing and pressing. Here you will find my recommendations on each of these fundamental areas of quilting. The topics are reproduced from my Beginners Patchwork and Quilting class notes and my other workshops.
For beginners there is no substitute for attending a Beginners Patchwork and Quilting course conducted by a Guild accredited teacher. The course will cover everything you need to know to be confident getting started in patchwork and quilting, including: terminology, fabrics, colour values, recognizing block categories, drafting blocks, patchwork techniques and essential requirements.
Learning how to draft blocks will free you from the restrictions of purchased patterns. You will be able to resize and alter blocks to suit your fabric and incorporate other design elements, and it is not difficult to learn.
Once you know the basics and how to do something the recommended way, then by all means experiment, read books by credentialed authors or go online. However, be descriminating, there is much misinformation and wishful thinking, often paraded as short cuts.
A well made quilt will be a loved quilt
Happy Quilting
