Accredited Quilting Teacher


Irene is an accredited quilting teacher through the ACT Quilters Guild, a member of Illawarra Quilters and the NSW Quilters' Guild.

She has been teaching quilting for over 20 years, including at HobbySew Top Ryde and Figtree, at many quilting stores in the Sydney region and at her classroom in Wollongong. Irene studied Pattern Making and Garment Assembly at Tumut TAFE. She integrates these professional techniques into her quilting classes.

Irene teaches at workshops organised by Illawarra Quilters.

Private Lessons

Getting Started

For beginners, private lessons will include the essentials of my Beginners' Quilting Course and will be tailored to your project.

For more advanced quilters, I can assist you to complete your quilting project by providing design advice, fabric choices and technique enhancement.

Lesson times are flexible and the cost is very affordable.

Fabrics

I can assist with choosing fabrics suitable for your design.

I have extensive knowledge of fabric types and suppliers in Sydney & Wollongong and reputable online suppliers.

Quilt Design

You may have been given fabric by someone special, or have scraps and just don't know what would be a suitable design.

I have many resources for designing quilts including an extensive quilting library, EQ8 quilt design software, making templates and will modify kits to suit your requirements.

I will always take into account your experience and the quilt's purpose.

Cost: $30 per 2 1/2 hr session

Note: All workshops and classes assume a minimum competence on machine sewing and fabric handling.

Fabric Colouring
Irene is an approved Liquid Radiance instructor providing one day workshops in fabric colouring.

Beginner’s Patchwork & Quilting Course. 8 x 3 hours
An excellent introduction to the basic concepts of patchwork and quilting. This eight week course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience. It is designed to teach techniques needed to make beautifully pieced and appliquéd quilts by hand and/or machine. A series of blocks will be completed which may, at a later stage, be used as cushions, or combined to make a small quilt.

Double Irish Chain. 1 x 6 hours
An ideal quilt for busy people. Improve your machine piecing skills while learning this simple but effective design.
Sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment required. 

Japanese Folded Patchwork. 1 x 6 hours
A unique way of producing a double sided quilt. Each unit is constructed separately and when completed may be joined together to produce a variety of patterns.
Quilt may be completed by machine or hand. 

Log Cabin “In-A-Day”. 1 x 6 hours
Speed piecing techniques, which eliminates the need to cut logs individually, are used to construct a Log Cabin Quilt.
Sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment required.

Quilt Construction Workshop. 1 x 6 hours
Turn those finished blocks into a quilt top. This One-Day Workshop is a great follow-up for those who have completed the Beginner’s Patchwork & Quilting Course or for quilters who have a set of blocks and require some guidance on “putting it all together". Straight and diagonal settings, sashings, posts, borders and bindings will be covered.
A sewing machine and 5, 6, 9 or 12 finished blocks required.

Scrappy “Quilt-As-You-Go” 1 x 6 hours
Learn the “Quilt-As-You-Go” technique to make a quilt without the hassle of feeding all that bulk through the small space in your sewing machine.
Sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment required.

Stack and Whack. 2 x 2 hours
Take the mystery out of kaleidoscope quilts. Learn the magic “Stack and Whack” method and delight in the unexpected patterns which occur from the most unlikely fabrics.
Sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment required.

Twist and Turn. 1 x 6 hours
Create a quilt using those wonderful themed fabrics. This method may also be used to “even-up” odd sized blocks or to blend friendship blocks into a unified design.

Mariners Compass. 1 x 6 hours
Would you like to know how to achieve those perfect points? Learn how to draft a Mariner’s Compass block and construct it using foundation piecing techniques.

The Artist

Irene likes to explore the variety found in colour and pattern and apply style and technique to give form to her creations.
Her many beautifully crafted quilts are testament to Irene's skill in design and technique
